There’s another new player in China’s EV SUV game. I gave it a ride.

Deepal S07 Review: A Stylish and Smooth Ride from China

The Deepal S07 is a new electric SUV made by Chinese automaker Deepal, a brand under Changan Automobile. It’s the company’s first SUV and part of their push to expand globally, with a goal to invest $10 billion in overseas markets by 2030.

I had the chance to drive the Deepal S07 for two days around Singapore, and I came away impressed. From the start, the car’s bold design caught my eye. With sharp angles, a sloped roofline, and a sporty look, it reminded me a little of the Lamborghini Urus. But while the Urus runs on gas and costs a fortune, the S07 is fully electric and much more affordable.

Despite its aggressive design, the S07 isn’t trying to compete with luxury brands like Lamborghini. Instead, it aims to take on other electric vehicles like Tesla, Volkswagen, and BYD. And it holds its own surprisingly well.

Designed in Turin, Italy and built in Nanjing, China, the Deepal S07 blends European styling with Chinese innovation. Deepal may be a newer name in EVs, but its parent company, Changan, has been making vehicles since 1959. The first Deepal car was launched in 2022, and the company has grown fast — delivering its 400,000th vehicle by the end of 2023. It hopes to deliver 500,000 more by the end of this year, including 100,000 overseas.

In China, the Deepal S07 is priced between 169,900 and 197,900 yuan (about $23,300 to $27,200). It launched in markets like Thailand, Australia, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, and recently Singapore, where I test drove it.

Driving Experience in Singapore

In Singapore, the S07 sells for around SG$220,000 (roughly $170,000 USD), which is high due to local taxes. For comparison, the Lamborghini Urus costs around SG$1.5 million, and the BYD Sealion 7, a direct competitor, is priced between SG$212,888 to SG$237,888.

The S07 has many premium features — 19-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof with a sunshade, and sleek door handles that pop out when you unlock the car. Its design feels modern and fresh compared to the more rounded look of a Tesla Model Y.

The cameras and sensors are nicely integrated, and the tight panel fit shows how far Chinese-made cars have come. A decade ago, many felt unfinished — but the S07 feels solid and well-built.

Interior Comfort and Space

Driving around Singapore, I found the seats supportive and the cabin quiet. The terracotta leather seats were comfy, though I felt the driver’s seat could use better shoulder support for long drives. The rear seats were spacious, and the flat floor gave even the middle passenger decent legroom.

The double-glazed windows blocked outside noise well, even at higher speeds. I never went above 65 mph due to Singapore’s speed limits, but the ride remained peaceful. I tested the 14-speaker sound system with some John Mayer tracks — the audio quality was excellent.

Storage and Tech

The S07 offers a lot of storage, with room for two large suitcases and duffel bags in the rear trunk, plus a carry-on in the front trunk. Inside, the clean dashboard is nearly button-free. Most functions are handled through a 15.6-inch touchscreen — including climate control, music, wipers, and seat heating. It looks sleek, but there’s a learning curve, especially if you’re used to traditional controls.

One odd design choice: the hazard light button is on the ceiling, which isn’t the most practical location.

Smooth and Steady Performance

Unlike some EVs that launch off the line with a jolt, the Deepal S07 accelerates smoothly. It’s still quick, but it doesn’t throw you back in your seat. The steering felt solid and responsive, much like a BMW X3. The ride was confident through corners, although the factory tires didn’t fully match the car’s sporty potential. Upgrading to better tires could really enhance the driving experience.
